”What do you mean that there’s no spare tire?” Tanya asks me as I tell her that we need to call the rental car company’s roadside assistance line to get help.

“Surprisingly, many rental cars don’t have those or any tools available.”

“Are you kidding me?” she huffs and crosses her arms. The movement makes her breasts lift, and I have to look away, so I don’t stare too long.

“I wish I was.”

I take off my sunglasses and run my hand through my hair, avoiding touching my stitches, as I wait for the company to pick up my call. After checking what had happened, we decided to sit in the truck as it was way more comfortable to wait for help inside the truck than outside in the sun.

“How long do you think it’ll take them?” Tanya captures my eyes with hers. In this light, they are a brilliant shade of blue, like the cloudless summer sky above us. Whenever our eyes meet, I understand why so many songs are written about blue eyes.

I touch her arm reassuringly. “Hopefully, not too long.”

“I can’t believe we’re stuck because of something so small.”

“The truck needs all its tires to get us from point A to point B, so it isn’t exactly small.”

A shadow of annoyance crosses her face. “I know, but we could have changed it ourselves if the rental had the tools needed.”

“I take it that you aren’t a very patient person.”

“I can be, but not when the fix is so simple.”

“Well, not too long until we’re back on the road,” I assure her.

We end up waiting an hour before help arrives. During that time, I insist Tanya has a nap while I listen to the audiobook through headphones, trying my best not to wake her up with my laughter whenever one of the characters says something funny.

When the tire has been changed and others have been checked, it’s getting close to dinner time. “Do you want to keep driving, or should we stop? The towing company guy mentioned a motel next to a diner around a few hundred feet away and it definitely sounds tempting,” I tell Tanya, who’s stretching in the passenger seat.

“It does, doesn’t it? Let’s stop for the night.” Her expression stills and grows serious. “Should we switch seats?”

”Thanks for worrying, but I’ll be okay with that short distance,” I say before driving us to almost full motel parking.

We hop out of the truck before walking past the round pool to the reception of the brightly painted one-story building.

“Welcome to Bedwell Motel. I’m Gunner, the owner. How can I help you?” the smiling man around his fifties says behind the counter and looks between us.

“Hi there, we would like a room with two beds or two separate rooms, please,” I greet him, smile plastered on my face.

Gunner shakes his head, his dark eyebrows slanted in a frown. “I’m sorry, but we only have one room with a queen bed left. The town is filled with people coming to the annual Sunflower Festival.
